It's mostly the sound and comfort of the singing - very rhythmic and soothing. If you've ever had to rock a baby or young child to sleep - you can do it by making up words - reading the newspaper, anything - as long as you use a soothing tone, make them feel comforted and safe, and use it as a quiet, bonding time. I've made up words to made up songs that I still remember - and which my grandchildren cherish. It's not the content - but the physical experience.

If you mean the song, it is calming when a parent sings to a baby. A repetitive song is nice and soothing, which is why hush little baby is a good one.
IF you mean how would daddy buying baby something comfort the child, uhhh...its just a song that has a nice rhyme. Thats all...not to be taken literally! :-)

I think the words are more for the parent to have something to sing whilst its the tone of the voice that comforts the baby

It's not the words it's the way you sing them.
A soothing melody in quiet terms with a familiar voice, you could read them the sports page of the newspaper and they'd still settle down.

better that than rock-a-bye baby where the cot goes flying or ring a ring a roses which talks about the death of millions because of the plague. There is somethinf eerie about kids songs which sound innocent but have such sinister words.

Kids love to hear you singing in a calm voice. It quietens them down and the words dont really matter.
Usually when you sing you are touching them in a comforting manner, that is what makes them feel good.

It is not the words that calms the child. It is the calm, soothing sound of your voice singing it in tht low sweet tone that does it.

It's not the words...it's the soothing, repetitive melody. You could sing la, la, la to that song.
Why do you think Rock-A-Bye Baby is so common? It's not for the 'when the bough breaks, the cradle will fall, and down will come baby'...:)

its the tune, also its teaching that if things go wrong there is always something to replace it also that your parents are there for you in every situation and the last line "you'l stil be the most beautiful baby in the world" is a reassurance
