I have never met a Director/VP/CEO level person who isn't in love with the idea that each person in the building must wear a name tag. What's the big deal? Chances are, people who work with each other know their co-workers' names. Is it to save the VP from embarassment because he/she doesn't know everyone's name? Don't they have more important stuff to worry with?

My employer does not (currently) have a key card, a security guard, nor receptionist. We are not required to present ID to gain entrance, so it has little if anything to do with building or personnel safety here.

It's part of a marketing strategy that asserts that customers are happier when they know the name of the person serving them. Customers are happier if they can know the employee on a first-name basis.

As an employee, I absolutely hated it, and I would never ask another to do it. I hate having strangers call me by name like they know me.

Its not for their embarassment, its for yours. If your CEO or VP knew your coworkers names and not yours, who would feel bad?

And for any groups or co's who may be visiting your site to easily talk with you.

For new hires, transfers, etc.

There are many good reasons. Many people forget that their "little" function within an organization is only a small slice of the pie. There are numerous other functions and groups within and they all have to work in unison to be a successful company.

Not so far, but you know what?, this q is such a cool thinking q that im g0ing to start to do so. This is a perfect opportunity to be creative by making my own crafty/personal name badge to keep in my purse just so i can walk all up into a store and actually greet those who greet me and to take the opportunity to say hello to those who serve me . I love this concept!

Security concerns, they need to control access to the office to prevent people stealing secrets, and the security staff is worthless without some kind of identification. I worked in a place where the security let a rapist in because so few people wore their badges.

Well not everyone knows everyone or needs to on a day by day but it's just polite to mention someones name if your in a meeting or some such. People like CEO's frankly meet thousands of people but don't wana offend because they cannot remember names.

In my experience, it's been because the management either (1) wants to be able to address you by name and/or (2) simply can't be bothered with learning the names of their employees.

I don't know about other people, but my name badge is my keycard to get into the building. If I don't have it, I can't open doors, and it's programmed to access all the specific areas I have clearance to get into.

I think it is kind of like you said, They don't work with you and all the employees every day so they can't remember the names and don't want to be embarassed.

Some folks have rotten memories when it comes to names (self included). Officially, it is to identify whom is working for the company, and who are just visitors, etc.

A name badge is a security issue for most firms. Don't you have more things to worry about?
