Hello everyone,
i'm a developer and i have all kinds of servers running on my computer. so i need really powerful anti-virus and firewall to secure my system. i've been using norton internet security for years, but it's such huuuuuge pain in the butt. i've decided to abandon norton internet security from now on and use symantec antivirus instead. most of my friends told me that symantec antivirus is an awesome choice (and i can get it from school for free). but i've never used it before and uncertain if it's suitable for me.

do you think this is the right move?
what would be your recomandation?

thanks!

Symantec and Norton are basically made by the same company but NIS and SAV are geared for different users. Norton products are more home/small office oriented and can be used standalone. They get updates off the web and are more "user friendly" for the average person. Symantec Antivirus requires a client and server setup to get updates from so you can't just install SAV on any PC by itself unless you have a server set up somewhere for it. Other than that, it's just as effective as Norton if you are otherwise happy with it.

I'm not a friend of norton and symantec is the same thing. They are both the same company these days. I found norton to be a greater resource hog than windows. I switch to AVG Free for my AV and use ZoneAlarm for my firewall. Its up to you what you want to use so do your research and think long and hard about the costs involved. You may be able to get the software from school and the updates free now, but you may find that you have to pay an annual subscription later. Keep that in mind since there are few things more useless than an out of date av. Good luck.

If symantec is Norton I would say NO! I had norton, ate my memory and hard drive up like it was nothing. I have since switched to Trend Micro. I love it. This sounds crazy but go to Best Buy or Circuit City, look at the shelf and see what brands are almost empty. If the shelves haven't been stocked in a couple days, it can give you a good idea what everyone is buying. When I did this last weekend, Trend was half empty, Norton was fully stocked. But my vote is Trend Micro.

I've used symantec & norton and but their not as good as AVG, i'm not sure how you get it as it was download to my new laptop by the friendly IT co I ordered it thru. If u type AVG antivirus it'll no doubt point u in the right direction! It runs a check every 24 hrs but doesnt open windows or ask u to click anything or agree to anthing, it just pops a tiny window up at end to tell u everything is complete, but u dont even know its scanning...its brill!!

Given the environment you described I recommend using Trend Micro Officescan myself. The tools that come with Trend and its level of updating and customer support is top notch

i have nothing against Symantec but its pretty much the same product as Norton, so if you dont like one i dont see why you would like the other
