Does anyone really care what the UN thinks? They are the largest anti-US organization in the world. I think it is the US governments decision to make, personally I don't care either way......

The UN has no jurisdiction or standing to declare our embargo of Cuba legal or not. No 3rd world pissants are going to dictate US policy to us.

I was never a big fan of the embargo, but I understand the politics of it. Unless it is completely bipartisan, then neither party is going to step on that land-mine. Because whoever supports it will lose Florida in the next election, and nobody is going to risk that.

The embargo was instituted back in the days we feared the Soviet Union would use Cuba as a base for it's missiles and bombers. There's no longer a need to worry about. that since missles are intercontinental and carry multiple warheads . I see no need to fear Cuba for any reason. If we can trade with communist China, why not Cuba??

Who cares about the UN? I don't, but I think trading should be allowed with Cuba because it would prove once and for all, that the communist system is what's hurting Cuba, not our sanctions against them, like Fidel Castro claims. If you notice, the communist countries that are prospering economically now are prospering because even though they are communist in name, they have started to adopt Western-style economic policies, and it's working. Pure, old style communism is what's hurting Cuba, and it was partly to blame for the destruction of the Soviet Union

My own personal opinion of the U.N. was sealed when they backed off from sending a 22,000 peace keeping force into Dafur because Sudan's president, Omar Hassan al-Bashir, refused to give them permission - despite over 3 1/2 years of revolt, 200,000 deaths and 2.5 million people forced from their homes - rampant murder, pillaging and raping of the people by the Arab militias and the U.N. needs "permission?"
I no longer think that the U.N. has much authority or resolve to do anything constructive - and the recent corruption doesn't exactly work in favor of changing my position.
They certainly shouldn't be allowed to determine America's foreign policy, that's for sure.
As far as Cuba - I don't think it's a great issue when one considers all of the real concerns presently facing our nation.

They are right.
Ending the embargo now while Castro is almost done, may allow Democracy to gain a homegrown foothold in Cuban Government. I am sure that most Cubans are tired of the last hundred years of dictators and oppression, and desire the ability to choose their own leaders.

The lack of Cuban sugar imports is devastating the quality of the American food supply. Would you like some corn syrup with that?

(trade benefits all involved; not trading benefits...nobody)

The U.S. government would answer "We could go it alone".

We don't endorse sanctions against Turkey, which is a dictatorship and doesn't allow free speech. They also jail people who say the Armenian Genocide happened.

We don't endorse sanctions against Saudi Arabia who happens to be a monarchy.

We don't endorse sanctions against China who is communist.

Sounds to me like a double standard. I think any sanctions against Cuba should be lifted.
