Because we don't value what we do have and can attain. We want more and what someone else has.
There is an excitement in dreaming about getting things. Each time you do get something you've wanted, that excitement goes away.
We think we need these things to make us happy. When we find that we aren't happy, we look around for more.
Somehow, simple and everyday pleasure does not satisfy, what can only be called, greed.

Not everyone wants what they know they cant have. Some accept that we cant have it and move on....there are so many wonderful alternatives to that BMW (just as an example) There is a saying which goes like this:
The key to happiness (peace) is not having what we want but wanting what we have.

because its the thought of either A. rubbing it in someone's face or B. just experiencing something new and knowing what it feels like to do or have that.

ITS HUMAN NATURE TO ALWAYS WANT MORE AND MORE. ALWAYS GREENER ON THE OTHER SIDE OF THE FENCE YET NO MATTER HOW HARD YOU TRY THE FENCE KEEPS GETTING FARTHER AND FARTHER AWAY.. I HAVE LEARNED THAT I WILL NEVER MAKE IT TO THAT GREEN SIDE.. IT'S OKAY THOUGH I DONT WANT TO HIRE A LANDSCAPER!
