Start small, don't feel overwhelmed! I would pick a pre-made family that's already in a house. Play them for a while. Learn how they interact with one another. Test out different interactions (annoy someone, kiss someone, dance together, etc.).
Once you get the basics of family interaction, create a Sim of your own (maybe yourself!) and play him/her. Or practice building houses. Start a family and have them live through old age. But start out with the basics first!

I agree with perfectvelvet---start out small until you get the hang of the game. Use the pre-made families and houses (like the Pleasants, Goths, etc.).
You could also play the Tutorial Game, which is depicted by three building blocks (the baby's toy). This will give you a pretty good idea of how to play and manage your families.
You'll get the hang of it.
Good Luck and Happy Simming!

Well, right now, i'm making the whole of CHERUB campus (it's in a book) and making movies with it to post on youtube.
I'm also designing lots of very fashionable and up-market houses and building Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry and getting Harry and ron and all that to live in it.
Not to mention, i totally screwed up a family by making the day cheat on his wife with the maid and the twins cheating on each other bf's.
theres so much to it i can't even begin to explain.
Do whatever you want to do with it! have fun, muck around.
if theres an item you don't have and need for the family / house you want on your sims 2 then go on this website:
http://www.modthesims2.com
it has EVERYTHING, Happy playing!

Woo-hoo. Thats the only fun things. Also, building insanely complicated houses puts some interest into the game. Other then that it's a little boring.
