Both games are two different games and played very different.
In Rugby League there are 13 players.
The object is to advances the ball to score tries, while your opposition tries to stop you by tackling.
To do this they are given 5 tackles to do it and once you’ll tackled, you must get up and play the ball by pushing it with the foot back between your legs to your team mates.
Once you’ve on your 5th tackle, you have three choices: 1) to go for it to score tries, 2) to go for better field position to keep their opposition in their own half, and 3) to kick and force your opposition to play at the ball to force a mistake to regain procession.
Minor infringements like rugby union are resolved with the use of the scrums and in league the scrums is used rather than a line outs, but a total of 6 persons are used to form a scrum in league, in rugby union they normally use a total of 8.
The points system is also different; In Rugby league tries are only worth 4 points and a penalty and a drop goal is worth 2 points.
In Rugby Union There are 15 players and like league the object is to score tries; ‘well that the aim of it anyway.’
The opposition is to try and stop you by tackling you, but there are no tackle counts.
Instead a ruck or maul is formed where both you and your opposition push to either gain or to maintain procession of the ball.
They would continue this until tries are scored or points are made.
The point system is 5 points for a trie and 3 points for a drop kick or a penalty.
Well, I hope that is of some help to you. Enjoy watching them both as they are both very enjoyable games.

Amelia Rose is right about most points, but the descriptions are a bit outdated. Think she has been watching too many Guinness adverts where the union player runs the length of the field before scoring. This never really happens in union, as there are too many players on the field.
The point about League being stop start and union continuous is totally wrong. In league when a player is tackled, the tackler has to get off pretty quick or will concede a penalty. It is in the interests of the attacking side to play the ball quickly to maintain their momentum. The rules are designed to keep the ball moving and play going.
Union is the exact opposite. Play can still be proceeding but the ball may be under a pile of players for tens of seconds. Not much happens except forwards attempt to push their opponent away and get the ball out, effectively stopping the flow of the game. The amount of penalties, scrums and lineouts in union means there is even less time that the ball is in play. This is the real stop-start game.
The amount of tries scored in the two codes bares this out. League is the open, flowing, try-filled game. Union is the game of attrition usually won by penalties. 20-30 years ago union probably was open, until kicking from the halfway line became the norm and tricking opponents into conceding penatlies became the aim.
However most Union fans I know have the romantic "Guinness" view of the game and seem unwilling to overcome their prejudicies and actually watch a league game.

These are some of the main differences between the two...
Number of players
-15 (2 extra forwards) -Union
-13 -League
Points for a try
-5 -Union
-4 -League
Points for a conversion (kick through goal after a try has been scored)
-2 -Union
-2 -League
Points for a field goal (kick though goal during play)
-3 -Union
-1 -League
Points for a penalty kick through goals after a penalty has been awarded)
-3 -Union
-2 -League
Tackles allowed
-Unlimited. The ball only changes if their has been a mistake/offence or if the ball goes out of play -Union
-6, and then the other team is given the ball, unless a try has been scored. -League
When the ball goes over the side line (into touch)
-A line-out occurs. This is similar to a "throw" in AFL - Union
-No line-outs in League.
What happens when there is a mistake in field
-A scrum occurs – like a ball up in AFL. 8 forwards push against each other as the ball is rolled into a tunnel between them -Union
-Scrum occurs - not a neat and ordered piece of play as in Union. -League
When a tackle occurs
-Rucks and mauls occur. Continuous play with constant competition for the ball. -Union
-The tackled player ‘play the ball' (roll it under their legs, thus play stops) -League
hope this helps!

Too many to go into. Many are mentioned above. No lineouts in League. No loose rucks or mauls in League. They are two different games.
