I will tell you what I told my kids.

A) Walk the neighborhood. Hit every minimall and business in walking distance whether they have a "hiring" sign in the window or not. Even if you dont know what they do (even a lawyer office needs cleaning crew)

B) Tell each of them that you live walking distance so there will be no "car broke down" excuses

C) if its someplace that you really want to work (electronics toy store? pizza place?) then speak only to the manager. Even if he isnt hiring TELL him that you really WANT to work there. Not just looking for any old job but you WANT to work THERE. Explain that you live close and can report immeadiately. No matter what he tells you, go back in a couple days and tell him again, and a couple days after that if you are still without work.

The reason for C is that there is always someone on the bosses crap list. Some who just hasnt pissed him off enough to fire them and go thru a hiring process to replace them. Give him the ammunition of being able to say "I got a kid begging for your job, and guess what? He just got it."

Dont sit at home and think about the minimalls near you. I can gaurantee that there is someplace you wont think of unless you actually go there and go inside every door.
