I know if we just dance to this song, I will get emotional, I'll cry, and my makeup will run. Not pretty. We decided to do ballroom to it so i'd be counting instead of crying. The dude we are taking lessons from recommended a rumba, but that doesn't seem quite right for the emotion of the song. Any suggestions for a more appropriate ballroom style?

Thanks, everybody, for your responses. After reading them, we went for our lesson, and are now doing a "modified waltz." It just feels so much better. Those that said it is a 1234 rather than a 123 are right, hence the modification that makes it like a fox trot + waltz. I just looked up the two step online. That looks great, too! We'll try that next time (nothing like cramming dance sessions for your wedding). Thanks again

I agree with you, the character of the song doesn't correspond to rumba. Night Club Two Step fits better than Rumba. Two Step is very easy to learn, which means you can make it look fancier.
P.S. I don't mean to offend people, but it's not Waltz. Unless my ears are ringing today, which is of course a possibility, there is distinct 1-2-3-4 in it, not 1-2-3.
Congratulations BTW.

It is a Waltz. Learn the basic BOX step with a couple of underarm turns and a couple of twirls and a graceful finish and you will look beautiful and perfect for each other !!!!! Everyone will sigh because the Waltz is a beautiful dance, I love it. Most Ballroom Dancing studios teach Wedding Dances for couples getting married. They will give you focused instruction on only one dance. That's all you need to think about right now. I dance with a lady who 5 years ago did just that, she and her fiance came to learn a wedding dance and she kept dancing although he didnt want to. He lets her come down and she dances her little heart out and goes home happy.

You're right in that the emotion of the song seems to call for something else, but the tempo will be very difficult if you try, say, foxtrot. Trust the choreography, and rumba will probably be your best choice unless you're both advanced dancers. The Latin aspects can be toned back, and it can be a pretty choice.

Rumba and Nite Club two step have a quick, Quick, slow pattern. waltz is 3/4 time. Check the beat and pick the one that matches.
Whatever dance you do, remember it is hard to do turns in a big wedding dress- go with simple patterns.

Just curious, but why would you choose a song about a couple having a few happy moments but ultimately breaking up as your wedding dance song? Wouldn't it seem more appropriate to pick something that's about love and not a painful breakup?

Try the slow country sashay, you just grab and go, grab the waist and trot and sashay across the dancefloor.
But if you are doing a wedding dance, you shouldn't do country, but do some slow listening, contemporary easy songs, like "Richard Marx" or "Peter Gabriel".

I love that song, as it has very special meaning to me, and I recommend the "Waltz". It has a three count step, and easy to do.

The Two- Step would probably be most beneficial for that song without losing grace and stature.
