The rough endoplasmic reticulum is for making secretory proteins like enzymes and antibodies. The smooth endoplasmic reticulum produces steroids in certain cells and conducts impulse in muscle cells.

the ER is formed by a complex 3 dimensional system of sheet like or tubular membranes enclosing spaces called cisternae.
RER- has ribosomes attached to its surface.
transports proteins, and also provides more surface area for the proteins to be synthesized,stores and transported.
SER- synthesis and transport of lipids

you would find alot of SER in the liver bcos it is involved in lipid synthesis.
