I think it should be taught around age 7-8. At that age, it is possible for most kids to understand what happened.

I do think the entire truth about slavery should be told, though. Meaning, the fact that slavery was all over the world and even in Africa where Africans took Africans as slaves. Only in this way can we avoid it becoming a "black vs. white" issue and rightly become a "good vs. evil" issue.

Children need to understand that any kind of slavery is wrong, irrespective of which race is being enslaved.

What should be told depends upon the ability of the person to understand (which has nothing whatsoever to do with chronological age).

As to "what age", the age a person first can understand such things.

What I would call a "normal" person is capable of understanding by age 5; but, as I said, it is individual-dependent, not a thing like the public schools in which one size fits all.

Believe me, in old days a 5-year old understood perfectly clearly what slavery was.

As soon as we understand what it means, young, and as much as it takes to clarify why it's wrong.
This is a moral part of understanding life, and morals must be taught as soon as the child is ready.
Slavery doesn't only apply to what we understand as the word, but any act that causes another to owe us, or us to owe and own another.
Slavery is denying another their personal freedom to choose as they so see fit. The ultimate definitition is the ability to actually physically control that other person, but there are mental slavery meanings, and moral too.

I think kids should be taught from the word go about things like slavery!

My kids are 5 and 7, and I've explained to them how countries were took over and people were basically kidnapped and made to become slaves, not just black people by the way!
As my kids get older I will give them more information, it's vital that they are aware of the world we live in!

When you study World History and Christianity in school.

Addition: I can't believe some people think slavery is about race. For centuries, people have been enslaved. Men, women & children. Jews. Christians. Muslims. Whites. Blacks. American Indian. etc.....

when the child is old enough to appreciate that the world is now quite a different place to the mid-1800s

when it is taught it should be with a sense of distance from the past

the teacher (whoever that is) should not personalise the issue and perhaps foster negative feelings to other communities they might meet

there is no need to create another generation of people looking for apologies for what not one of us still alive was responsible for

learn, understand and move on

the past does not owe you a living

As soon as we can. This stops children growing up with terrible thoughts in their mind and we should be told everything that we know about slavery.

As soon as kids can understand the concept of racism, I'd say around middle school. And we should teach them things they arent gonna learn in school. Teach about people besides MLK Jr, and Malcom X. The slave trade would be important, and the fact that most of our presidents own slaves. And that President Lincoln wasnt an abolitonist, he jus freed tha slaves to help him win tha war.

Early. I see little kids joking about slavery all the time... like my bro and his little freinds... "hahaha tag your my slave!"

I just want to kill them sometimes.

maybe 5th or 6th grade, maybe earlier than that even. They could gradually work it in, more and more detailed each school year, so if there is anything graphic they will be old enough to handle it by the time they are taught about it.
