Handling criticism is a first grade level class I'm building on cognitive dissonance. Basically, "what do you do when someone calls you a name?" The standard reaction is to get angry and upset, but that's not very healthy. Teachers and parents usually say "ignore it" or if it's really bad "tell a teacher". This results in adults that completely ignore all input, even the good stuff, if they disagree with it. Alternately, they appeal to authorities and get legislative or litiganous at you.
The best way to deal with it is to figure out what the person is saying, figure out if it's true. If it isn't true, then you can disregard it. If it is and you don't like it, then fix it. If you can't fix it, then live with it.
A separate issue is the intent of the person who said it. If they're trying to hurt you, then you now know something about that person that maybe you didn't know. You can use it to your advantage instead of letting him/her drive you to their advantage. If they're honestly being helpful, then you can maybe take their next piece of advice more seriously.

I try not to care too much
or I respond with a witty comeback
But sometimes, if its criticism that can help me in a way, whether its a pro player at some sport im trying or a really close freind that knows me really well- i think about it more and try too see where the person is coming from

Actually, people have been quite kind and thoughtful, even complimentary. I haven't had any harsh criticism thrown at me, not that I've noticed.
I suppose I wouldn't return criticism unless I felt there was a valid reason. I imagine that it would be a defense, not an attack.

Take it with a grain of salt. Some of the criticism has merit, but a lot of the time it's just people blowing off steam and I try to pay no attention.

Online criticism?
I LOVE when people criticize pics of me on AOL pictures, then you look at a picture of them and their missing half their teeth, are wearing dirty clothing, and haven't washed their hair in two weeks.
People criticize others because they feel bad about their own life/looks.
Anyone who criticizes someone else for their appearance is PATHETIC TRASH, and needs to euthanize themselves.

...I carry my trusty
"Criticizer Annihilator"...it scrambles their words...
...for instance, if someone said to me,
"Get off the road, lousy #$**@# driver"!,
then my Annihilator catches the words, transforms them and shoots a phrase right back and says something like...
"Your flare for phonics is only exceeded by your ability to use Velcro" , "Have a nice day" !

I simply reply to the criticism...I couldn't care less what people think about me, if they think I'm ugly, stupid or annoying..then they don't have to answer my questions or look at me...they can all go to hell...& ofcourse I press that shnazy little block button on their profile page

i don't know where it goes actually... i know it bounces off of me, but where does it go? that is a good question ... it is probably either floating around in space, or it hits me at such warp speed that it just shatters when it hits this tough exterior... (i am a softy inside though)..
