Tools > Internet Options > Delete Browsing History > Delete all.
If your using Firefox just go to Tools and click "Clear Private Data". If your not using Firefox I recommend getting it (you can even set it up so it clears the cache every time you close the browser!).
If your really concerned about privacy, there are still traces of your online activity stored in the registry and "index.dat" files that cannot be removed from within your browser. CCleaner will remove these "index.dat" files making future recovery very difficult. CCleaner is free and removes all traces of your online activities (highly recommended).

I am assuming you have the latest Toolbar software installed.(if you have one with tabbed browsing then it would be the latest one) If you click on the little pencil/pen icon next to the search box on the toolbar. It would have an option to go into Toolbar options. In the options you would have search options with options like Keep Search history and also clear search history when closing IE window. Put a tick in the check box and accept changes. Restart all your IE sessions, which should make changes effective and hopefully sort out your problems.

All of the other's suggested the correct process for deleting history.
Though if you have an older version of internet explorer you may have to do one additional step.
Go to your internet options
Go to the content tab
find the autocomplete section
click settings
then click clear forms

Or, you can just click onto Tools, and then (first thing on the pull-down menu) Delete Browsing History.
