I was a rodie in mid 70's through early 80's. Worked midwest, Ill, Oh, Ind, WIsc, etc. Seger, Rundgren, Chicago, Cooper, Yes, etc.
First time I worked Billy Joel "Piano Man" had hjit charts about 2 weeks before we started a 3 week swing. FIrst night there were tech problems with some other instruments and Joel goes to the Rhodes, puts on sunglasses, swings his head and does his best (Damn good!) Ray Charles imitation and sings (first time I heard it) New York State Of Mind.
first thing I think about when I hear the words " New York"

Unfortunately, the first thing that comes to mind when I see or hear New York, is the plane crashing into the twin towers. I still remember exactly what I was doing on that dreadful day.

Definitely the city and skyscrapers.
It's kind of how people from outside South Carolina think the only city here is Charleston. It's not. Greenville's way better :)
