... when only 1/3 of the government is elected by the people?

The Legislative branch is the only branch of the government elected by the people. The Executive branch has the President and Vice President elected by electors, then the remainder of the branch appointed by the President (with confirmation by the Senate). And the Judicial branch is also appointed by the President (with confirmation by the Senate).

Does this sound like a "Democracy" to you? If you think it does, please explain.

It's easy. You open your mouth, run some air across your vocal chords and vibrate them so that you form the sounds "Demmm ohhhhh crrraaaa seeeeeee"

Since the executive branch in this country actually has limited powers, the important body is directly elected by the people. Thus, while only one of the three branches is directly voted for by the people, it is the branch that does the bulk of the work of governing. And, the people also vote for the electors for the President, so it is democratic that way.

BTW, to those who say we're a republic, not a democracy, please check your definitions. We are both a republic and a representative democracy. There is nothing in the definition of republic that says it cannot be a democracy.

Its a Republic. The House of Representatives has always been democratically elected. The Senate, until the 17th amendment ratified in 1913 was elected by state legislatures, after that they were elected by the people of the state they represent. The President is elected by the electoral college to ensure people in all states have a say in who is elected president, if it were done by popular vote, only states with large populations would factor into the election.

If it weren’t for the Electoral College, the few big cities would run this country. This republic is about a close to a Democracy as you are going to fine. With as few as actually take the time to both educate themselves about issues & Candidates then make the time to vote we are lucky we've kept the rights we have.

Well you didn't mention the SHAMlections of 2000 AND 2004. If we can get a transparently HONEST election, then we might be back on the correct road. If the election was held today it would be CROOKED!!! Down with Dictator Dumbya!!!

You make very valid points. It does seem like everytime we supposedly vote a President into office, he brings his friends along for the ride.

To what good that does is to serve his pesonal interests.

We brush it off because of the fact we are shy yet we adore getting the compliment and being referred to as fat or gruesome purely gets us down because of the fact it relatively is an insult and no one likes getting insults.
