Someone who wishes they were like everyone else, but don't quite fit in. So they go to extreme lengths to be different. They pretend that they don't want friends, but they really do. Eventually, they put up a wall. Then they prefer being alone because it's comfortable.

There are definite steps to insanity. The first is just past neurosis when crying is uncontrollable from then the steps lead to an episode of loss of reality and fears. From then more depression chemicals reach the medulla and one becomes unable to make decisions and words take on double meanings. The brain reaches a feverish level trying to see the world as flat again. Finally language fails and so communication is gibberish. That psychotic level is suicidal or a complete failure to thrive in any way. The final episodes are dangerous as the person cant trust anyone or even what he thinks. Pain does not exist.

someone who is comfortable with being alone
someone who can/can't get along with people and prefers solitude
someone who has things to do that others would get in the way of: writing, sketching, painting, researching, etc.
someone who has been wounded by people and has retreated
someone who may be shy or angry or in some other state of mind where s/he would rather not be around anyone else
someone who has no one to share interests with
Eventually, the majority of loners do find others like themselves. That doesn't mean you have to stop being a loner~if you prefer to be. I am alone most of the time, have been throughout my life, but I get along beautifully with lots of other loner-types at SF/fantasy/horror conventions, Renaissance faires and other reenactment events, and Heavy Metal/hard rock concerts.
