The genes that cause light colored eyes are probably located close to those that cause light skin color in a chromosome. That would increase the chance of those two things being inherited together. Then you have to factor in dominate and recessive genes when it comes to alleles and stuff like that. Honestly I don't know the exact reason behind the original pigment of the iris. I only know that dark skin was an adaptation due to the high amounts of melanin that protected the skin from exposure to ultraviolet light. I would attempt to explain this better but I'm still in high school and have yet to take more than one biology class.
