Back when i took lessons as a kid they would have me go through the toss without hitting it and then catch the ball. It helps you get a feel for it.

the only real way to improve your toss is to keep doing it. make sure your left arm stays straight, and the only things you use are your shoulder and your fingers. move your arm upward slowly and release the ball. if you release it at the same spot every time, your toss will more or less be consistent. keep practicing. you should be able to toss the ball up and catch it again without moving your feet. make sure you aren't using your wrist at all.

as far as the rest of your serve, the best advice that i can give you, since i don't know what your serve looks like, is that you should make sure your arm is lose, and it goes through your motion smoothly. it should be similar to tossing a football. make contact high, and let your arm swing through smoothly. don't worry about side spin until you can hit a flat one consistently.

when you are ready, practice making contact on the outside part of the ball for spin. hit through it still, and the angle of the racquet face and where you contact the ball will provide the spin.

i am just assuming you have the same problem i do. no matter where the toss is you will go for it. what you have to do is just stand at home and practice your toss. take the ball and toss it up and out in front of you. put something a foot or two in front of you and try and hit the object with the ball.

to improve your serve you have to take this into consideration...where are you in your year. if you need your serve now and can't take some bad serving days than you need to just cope with the serve you have now.

if you have some time or don't mind losing some games take just one lesson with a coach. 30min to an hour and just focus on the serve. see what he recomends. if a coach is out of the question ask others what they do and develop off of that or just go out and try **** till it works. develop your serve. make it a strength.

p.s. don't pussy the 2nd serve over. it makes you look weak.

1. Stand at far end of the tennis court close to wall/fence.
2. Toss the ball and then aim to hit the opposite wall .
3. Try hitting the ball with a loose fluid action. It is a WHIPPING action like throwing a baseball or using a whip.
4. You will notice one of 2 things:
a. If you have the correct whipping action the ball will hit the opposite wall.
b. if you have a non whipping action the ball will fall in the opposite service box just like a regular serve.

5.Once you have mastered this WHIPPING action procced to the service line.Relax. Now carry out the same sevice with a whipping action.

You will now see a marked improvement in your serve.

For me, ball toss problem is all in my head. The more I focus on it, the worse it gets. I take the focus off my tossing arm by focusing on the arm swinging the racquet and making sure that I bend my knees.

Practice helps establish muscle memory in the begining; the real benefit of practice comes from building confidence, which makes a lot of difference.

My best advice is make sure that your service motion is fluid and simple, video tape yourself and/or get a teaching pro to take a look at it. A good service motion will minimize the adjustments you have to make in order to get a good toss by helping you not to have to think about it.

Place the racket at your feet, bottom of the handle at your foot. Now toss the ball, but try to have it land on the head of your racket. Your toss should be that far, and you should be hitting up towards it.

put your racket on the ground in front of you by home and practice throwing the ball straight up. if it hits the racket, your toss was in the right place.
