The current Red Sox were never the Red Stockings. They changed from Americans to Red Sox before the 1908 season:

There have been other Red Stockings teams in Boston. The first was in the National Association (NAPBBP), and the second split time between the Players League and the American Association.

They adopted the name Red Sox in December of 1907 and used it starting with the 1908 season. They never officially had another nickname. They were called Americans by the press before that, but that was to primarily distinguish them from the Braves. Americans was never an official name of the team.
