5 1/5 is a mixed number.

To make it an IMproper fraction; I think you have misunderstood 'improper' for 'proper'; multiply '5' the whole number by '5' the denominator and add '1' the numerator, and put it all over the denominator.
So 5 1/5 = 26/5 ( Improper (Top-Heavy) Fraction).
Next multiply the two fractions together:-
26/5 x 3/11 = 78/55 (An 'improper fraction'). Convert back to a mixed number.
78/55 = 1 & 23/55 The ANSWER!!!!

Make 5 and 1/5 IMproper. Take the denominator (5), multiply it by the whole number (5) and add the numerator (1).

26
---- is the new fraction.
5

When you multiply this by 3/11, then you can multiply both numerators together, and then multiply the denominators together.

26/5 * 3/11 = 78/55

You can leave the answer improper, or rewrite it as a mixed number 1 and 23/55.

You convert your mixed number into an IMproper fraction, where the numerator is larger than the denominator.

You have 5 units and one fifth of a unit, so you`re changing it into fifths:

In one unit, there are 5 fifths, so in five units there are 5x5 = 25 fifths. add one more, and you`ve got 26 fifths = 26/5.

proper fraction -- the numerator is less than the denominator.

mixed fraction --- the numerator is greater than denominator.

mixed fraction = quotient + remainder/denominator

ex : 26/5

5)26(5
---25
_____
----1

so 26/5 = quotient + (remainder/5 )= 5 + 1/5
