I have a Brother MFC 440 CN which I don't recommend buying. It looks flash, but the color ink runs out quickly even when you're only printing black and white. When only one cartridge is empty, it won't print period.

My question is, is it possible to take the printer apart and manipulate the ink sensors so that I can just print with black ink. Customer support of course could only suggest buying the expensive color cartridges (at 28 bucks a pop!) I'd be buying a cartridge every three weeks (and I don't even print in color),

Thanks!!

So, after reading your message Elfageek, I remembered I had a Brother HL 2030 laser printer in my closet (that was given to me). So I pulled it out, began installation, and I keep getting a message that the driver is not compatible with Windows XP. Online I can update the driver, but I need to save it to a temporary directory - and low and behold, I don't know how to do that???? Not so computer savvy here I guess...can you (or anyone) help me with that?
Thanks again!

No, printer manufacturers want their printers to run out of ink so they make more money. You probably should have bought a monochrome laser instead.

My Brother HL-1435 has been running for 5 years with the small factory toner cartridge. And, I print a lot.
