In Politics, especially, if you disagree with someone elses viewpoint, why don't you state that you disagree and why and not get all personal. Taking snipes at the elected officials is one thing, they are public figures and subject to sniping, but for someone just answering a question with their viewpoint to be harassed is beyond the pale. I can think of one poster on Y!A that has received email death threats from another poster at one time and I have seen postings that threaten everything thing from calling for a strifing attack on their home to having someone threaten me with contacting the CIA and telling them I am a terrorist, to which I responded if it make them happy, to go for it. Why is this such a vitriolic area on Y!A? Even the R&S doesn't get this worked up.

Thems are the snivelers. It is possible that something you may have said made sense and the only response was to attack you for their own sudden realization that they could be wrong and someone else is right. Personally I think this forum is great and many smarter people than I have posted responses or questions that give me the opportunity to improve myself. Of course you have to be open to ideas to do that, but I select the ones that are meaningful and LMAO for the narrow and idiotic views. It's fun, entertaining, and learning all at once.

Politics by nature can bring about heated arguments (disguised as debates). That is why you never discuss, religion and politics unless you want a fight. What that actually means, is that people are passionate about the way they view their ideas on those two subjects, which both are constant in this forum. People have a tendency to take it too far, and many do, which only harms their credibility which detracts from the actual debate. We as a nation are split 50-50 on the direction we would like to see this country take, that is a serious tug-of-war, and unless we can find some common crowd, we will become stagnant, and move the nation in neither direction, only the two groups will move further apart.

I try not to make attacks "personal", but I sometimes make the broad generalization questions. Half the time it is done to see how they respond. IT amuses me! But there are way too many attacks on a person, or group of people. IT is done because you are hiding behind a computer, and who cares if you type something offensive. I think that has a lot to do with it.

Well, politics *is* one of those no-no topics at a social gathering (religion and politics), because people can take such offense.
Sometimes, however, despite the name-calling, I appreciate reading opposing viewpoints. If they're well-made, I even consider them :-)

I have some lunatic emailing me with the pretext "If I don't fight in the war, I'm a coward and not allowed to support the war." There seems to be virtually no fact that can be provided to get him off message. I don't know if he's a low level nutjob, autistic, or someone to worry about.
I think some namecalling in here serves a purpose...it saves time. When one is identified as a liberal or conservative, those words tend to say a lot in very little space. Some like to shorten it to dems, libs and cons...I don't mind that.
I think the obsessive ones probably need their meds.

Wow - I've never seen anything quite that bad. But people hide behind their computers thinking that makes them anonymous, and assume that gives them license to say anything they want, no matter how immature or just plain stupid they sound. It's kind of like a football fan of one team insulting a football fan of another team.

I don't know but there are some really rude people hanging out in this forum.
I think it'd be fun to meet some in person- see if they have the nerve to say in person what they say on the web. Somehow I doubt it.

Taking shots at politicians is NOT okay. They're human beings and should not be treated differently.
To say that they are "public figures" and that it's okay to attack them is a distortion of morality. Don't let the freaks and imbiciles teach you that your own bad behavior is justified for certain people.
