Erie has its merits. You can buy a nice house in Erie or the surrounding areas for $200,000.

The nice things about Erie, its big, but not too big. Great people. Always something to do. Close to Pittsburgh, Cleveland and Buffalo if you need a big city fix.

Lots of shopping. Lots of restaurants. Bars. Casino/live horse racing track recently built.

Presque Isle, one of the most beautiful nature wonders.

Downsides: Hazy, hot and humid are summertime buzzwords. Lake effect snow will become a forecast you HATE.

Bonus: One of the easiest city commutes you will ever experience. There are some many ways to get from point A to point B, traffic is not really an issue.

There are lots of places where 200K will buy a decent house but I think you are asking the wrong question. WHY are you looking at 200K houses in any state? What is your reasoning behind the purchase? Because the answer depends on the what and the why. If you are buying for an investment then you will get an answer based on population growth rates, current market conditions, and future price increases.
If you are buying for a personal residence then the answer will have more to do with your hobbies, life style, and job or profession. Do you like the ocean or mountains? Do you water ski, snow ski, hike, bike, opera, or zen?
Ask a more specific question to get more specific answers.

Come to Joplin or Springfield, MO. You can get a palace in Joplin for $200k. I'm looking at a 2,700 sq ft split, 4/3/2 with a den and family room in an awesome neighborhood for under $160k.

Anywhere in the U.S.? Too many places to list. Even in Southern California, I can find a house like this for you, but it will not be in the best area. Some small, remote cities in Riverside and San Bernardino counties in Southern California have a lot of houses like this.

Houston,TX. $200,000 will buy you a very nice house. Heck, $100,000 will buy you a pretty nice house. Houston has one of the lowest real estate markets in the country. But if you don't like hot weather, try North Carolina instead. It gets hotter'n hell here in Houston.
