Some believe a butterfly is a sign of the other side, perhaps a loved one. Also it is a sign of transformation since the butterfly has transformed from a cocoon state. Perhaps you need to look into a portion of your life that needs changing.
Last, but no least...Long ago when Christianity was becoming popular and being Pagan was becoming deadly (persecution) Pagans would wear a symbol of the butterfly or a piece of jewelry in the form of a butterfly so other Pagans would know their brothers/sisters.

I have heard that when you see a butterfly it is the spirit of someone who has passed on & is coming to you, usually when you're in need,
Heard this from an 86 year old woman

i think that is good luck and a good sign. the butterfly took time out of its day to bless you with its beauty and to surround you with a touch of nature to remind you that the creator approves of your existance and the spirit of the butterfly is blessing you in a special way with its carefree energy. anytime an animal comes to you it is a very good sign. feel lucky and have a wonderful day!
