I have kids so it's nice to use the extra rinse cycle for their clothing to make sure all the soap is out.. Other than that it's just a matter of using less soap. You can also save energy by only running one appliance at a time... .Run the washer OR the dryer but, not both at the same time. If you have a dishwasher run it on time delay at night while you are asleep and NOT using the hot water anyway. That will help as well. I've been doing this for over a year and my electric has gone down by at least half. I like having the extra rinse cycle for heavy items like blankets or sheets that may not rinse properly as well. However, you CAN choose NOT to use the extra rinse feature so I think it's good to at least have the option. If you are trying to save $$$ change your bulbs to CFL's and turn you hot water tank down to 120 degrees/ wrap the water tank with insulation to keep it hot... That should help.. Also, you can get a dryer hose that allows for the warm air to come back into the house (minus) lint. We have one and it really heats the basement when I'm doing laundry... Instead of wasting it by blowing it outside.. Good luck

I use the extra rinse option with every load because I started looking at the water during the rinse cycle and it was still dirty (dirty enough for a second rinse). And while during the second rinse it's still not perfectly clear I feel that my clothes get cleaner. It also gets that last bit of soap rinsed out.
Although if you are trying to save water and money a second rinse is not needed. It's just a personal preference.

I make my own detergent with castile soap, so there is no odor, and I can add ingredients I want. like baking soda and borax. Clothes are clean, and have no odor. I scent it with EO, but not necessary, though it does provide antibacterial properties. well water is free, I have city water and pay for every drop. new homes should have a grey water recovery system, and ways to harvest rain water. It's not just consumption, but what goes into the laundry, ends up in the ocean!

I use it sometimes , as I am not always able to gauge the amount of detergent that I use.
If you want to conserve try using the delicate cycle as its about 15 minutes shorter

I use it on every load.... when detergent is left in your clothing, it ruins the fabric. Simply using less detergent isn't good enough. If you don't use enough, the clothes don't get clean... I rinse everything twice.
I wish it didn't cost more to do that, but to me it's worth it.

Pros- If you have sensitive skin and want your undershirts and underwear to be completely soap free use the extra cycle.
Cons- Wastes water and if you dont want things with any soap just use less soap.

I like to use it with certain detergents because sometimes I feel like the odor from the detergent is too strong.
