As night was falling and the desert world began to settle down, Sunshine and Mary huddled together. As hot as the daylight hours had been, the evening cold was just as powerful.
They spent the entire night holding eachother. Mary cried intermittedly, moaning for a warm bed. Sunshine comforted herself with the vision of Matt wrapping her in the warm blankets of his arms.
She fell into a fitful sleep, envisoning herself as a bird....With the freedom to leave this desert wasteland and fly at her will, to safe, green pastures.

When morning had broken, so had the cold of the evening. The scorching heat soon returned, as did their thirst.
Mary:"Sunshine....Please stop apologizing about the water. I know it was an accident. Heck, without you, I 'd be dead by now. You're my Lewis and Clark, babe."
Sunshine kissed her cheek and started walking....."Let's get going." They took off for Rattlesnake Bluff, exhausted, parched and scared.

Meanwhile back in Dodge, Matt got word from the stagecoach company about the accident. He was saddled in 5 minutes, on the road, in search of Mary and his Sunshine.
He knew that Sunshine would keep her wits about her. He also knew that noone could last without a good supply of water. He was frantic and determined ...... He wasn't going to lose her........Not Sunshine. He took another swallow from his canteen, wiped his brow, and moved on.

By mid afternoon he saw something up ahead...Was it a mirage? Were his eyes playing tricks on him or was it the two women? He rode faster and looked in horror as Sunshine and Mary came into view. As he jumped off his horse Mary looked up. Disoriented, as if in a daze, she just stared. Matt gave her his canteen as he looked at the crumpled form of Sunshine, laying on the ground by Mary's feet. He gently cradled her head.
Mary:"I'm sorry, Matt. Sunshine is dead."
Matt looked at her motionless body. He clutched her tightly to his chest and cried.
