I have a pair of glasses now, but the have fallen apart 10 times and the lenses are scratched to hell. I have a stigmatism so I need a specific prescription and I can tell I'm going to need a stronger one. Is there any way for me to get glasses without paying a tremendous amount? In order to find out my prescription now I'll need an appointment. Is there any hope or am I screwed?

Check at your local county or community health dept, and see if there's a program that will help you. Otherwise, talk to a local optometrist and see if they offer payment plans. Maybe they can help you, or recommend an optometrist that will. Finally, if you're able to do so, put the bill on a credit card, so that you can spread out the payments a bit.

I suppose it depends on where you live. Here in Missouri to get a good eye doctor (and the right prescription) it costs about $200 for the exam and a pair of inexpensive glasses. I pay $100 for an exam and trial contact lenses (I use the kind for astigamstism that you don't have to take out at night, and they are WONDERFUL). I get a box with 6 lenses for each eye and they last about 10 months (I make the lenses last longer than a month) and it costs me aprx $100. It's worth it though not to wear glasses, and all I have to do is put drops in my eyes in the morning and at night.

Call you local social services department - they might have referrals to eye doctors who do no or low-cost exams.
Doesn't the Lion's Club do this sort of thing?
The other option is to suck up and pay for them yourself - I don't have insurance either but get glasses when I need them.

You can get new lenses cut to fit your existing frames. You do not need to buy new frames. Find somewhere that has inexpensive exams and inexpensive lenses.

There is also an organization called "the lions'club" they may be able to help. They help people who can't afford glasses.
