I recommend Santa Fe. I'm not a big fan of touristy places and found Santa Fe to be charming with many places to see, great restaurants and a charm all its own. To me, Taos seemed to be more about gift shops and such than culture and history.

In Santa Fe, I recommend the Georgia O'Keeffe Museum, the US American Indian Arts Museum and the Museum of Fine Arts. If you don't stay there at least go look at the Inn at Loretto - one of the largest adobe structures in existence. Next door is the Loretto Chapel which includes a spiral staircase with no visible means of support. Truly a wonder.

Santa Fe is pretty, but I think that you would have a better time in Toas it has more tourist things to do.
