Its according to whom you are telling it too. If children--no --sugar coat it--you don't want to put fear in a child's heart and make them afraid of growing up for the perhaps hard life that you may have had to go through! When you get older--and have gone through a long journey and have had lots of life's experiences-- You may want to tell the truth-- (to adults) so that others may learn from your mistakes. Lessons in life are learned by the person-- never the one who is telling the story---- We all fall from time to time and lessons at times are so very hard--Life isn't easy nor' is it a garden path without thorns. When a person falls as an adult---he/she is the one who has to pick themselves up-- Mother and Daddy are not there to pick you up when you grow older.

If you are going to tell of a lesson that life has taught you it is best not to "sugar coat" it.
A lesson can only be taught if the person teaching knows the facts and tells them as such.
A "sugar coated" lesson is called a story.

First off, they would need to be old enough to understand, because I would be very truthful and tell them like it is, maybe a little hard for someone younger than 15 or so, to comprehend.

i would tell them like it is because if you sugar coat it then sometimes they think lightly of it and carry on with their life as normal
like for instance i would say:
a mistake is only a bad one of you dont learn from it !

Yeah, why would you lie about that? each person has their own experience so granted hopefully they won't think their life journey will be the same as yours.

I would tell them how it is.
One lesson I have learned is you can't make things change by doing nothing.
