When Sidney Crosby was a tricycle motor, he was a stick boy for the Halifax Mooseheads of the QMJHL (his cousin was captain of the team). Ray Whitney was one of the Oilers' stick boys during Wayne Gretzky's late career in Edmonton, the other was Ryan Smyth. During the 1984 Canada Cup, when Smyth was a child, he and Whitney were the stick boys as well. Thus, the famous story of how while Smyth was in the rink parking lot, Glenn Anderson backed up his car over him.

Any other famous stick boys?

Brian Mullen was a stick boy for the Rangers in the 70's. When he got to Winnipeg as a rookie in '82, Lucien Deblois, who was a Ranger during Mullen's stickboy days, took him under his wing and showed him the NHL ropes.

Mullen points to that relationship as having been critical in his assimilation to pro hockey.

Eddie Olczyk was gopher for the Black Hawks in the early 80s. He didn't do sticks, but he ran errands for Magnuson and Tessier at practice. I think he left for Stratford to get away from Tessier.

I also know that Denis Cyr (former Flame and junior teammate of Denis Savard) was a stickboy with the Canadiens prior to joining the Jr. Canadiens.

I remember that the stickboy in St. Catherines when I was there was a cousin of Terry Sawchuk.

In one of the last years I scouted, the Sudbury Wolves had a stickboy and a stickgirl.

I've never paid much attention to these people. The only people I paid attention to were the people who brought us hot coffee while scouting games. Those were the real heroes in the trenches.

Although he is not famous for really anything else, that guy in Edmonton - Joey (something), sorry don't recall his last name but he has done T.V. commercials and I believe he even does some work for the Eskimo's too. I would say although probably no where else but Alberta he would be considered pretty famous.

I thought I had once heard that Teppo Numminen was the stick boy for the Finns at the 1980 Olympics. I couldn't find any supporting evidence of that though.
