Even though I'm from the North and am I staunch defender of the place some of cities up hear are tragic, absolute woe...Sheffield, Newcastle, Middlesborough, Bradford (haven't been to Sunderland or *shiver* Hull)...in fact pretty much everywhere except York, which is quite scenic.

Why is the appearance of an industrial history "ugly"?
The cities of the north were the powerhouses of the industrial revolution, and are objects of beauty to be preserved. A Lancashire cotton mill is no less beautiful than a gothic cathedral.
