if it were possible to convince yourself not to think about someone... then ... since "missing" someone is thinking about them... you would be able to stop missing them.... but I don't think it's possible to selectively think...

The hard part would be to convince yourself not to think about them. You can keep busy enough so you don't have to think. But, once you sit down for a break or go to bed at night all your thoughts come to surface. Eventually if you are determined to get them out of your mind it will work. But it will probably take longer than you wish.

I've never been able to make myself NOT think about someone. It works the opposite; the harder I try, the more I think about them. I just let my thoughts and feelings work through their natural course, eventually it doesn't hurt as much to think of someone I miss.

if you're strong enough to keep your mind off of someone, you may not miss him/her too much, but in a whole day you can't be busy every single minute, you'll eventually think about that person and miss him/her.

but with time and the work of self convinction, you'll start missing this person less, of course.

Seems to me that the thing about this process is this. By forcing yourself NOT to think about this person, you are in fact thinking about them more. You are putting more, time, energy, and emotion into NOT thinking about them, but that IS thinking about them, or you wouldn't be doing it in the first place.

So no, I don't think it works. I know this because I have tried this time and again, to no avail.

No, because you are still fixating on them even though you are not looking at them.
