a: the square of any nonzero real number is positive. However, b and c are only true if x is positive, and it is possible that x is negative, so a is the sole correct answer.

x is either positive or negative, so you have to try each statement with both cases. If X is negative, B is wrong, and C is wrong if X is positive. But, a positive times a positive is positive, and a negative times a negative is positive.
