It is mandatory, you do not get paid a reasonable wage (not even minimum wage). Sure, some, although very few, employers pay you for it, & they are not required to do so by law. The court pays $15.00 a day, how are you supposed to live on that?

So why is it that our government can force us to participate in something that can cost us our homes or at the very least put us in debt? Isn't this america, where we are supposed to have freedom of choice?

Oh & don't tell me that you can get out of jury duty by claiming financial hardship, cause at least in L.A. County they removed that ability.

hi, I am 49 & haven't been on a jury yet & I never lied. I remember a quote, & am not sure who said it, but I always liked it! "
I don't want to be judged by 12 people too stupid to get out of jury duty"!

It's a system that could be amended/tweaked to be less antagonistical as why threaten your potential jury pool and poison it with threats of jail and fines. It immediately gets on the wrong foot about a process that could have significantly more willing / less disgruntal participants. Those who find no fault with it may do so for the reasons of opposing those who do find fault. As for telling people they can leave or suck it up, they should remember these are the people who may sit on any jury they are the subject of, hopefully they are not subject to how quickly can we vote to go home vs which lawyer presented the law in the most enlightening fashion. And that, the judge, the lawyers, the ballif, more knowledgeable about the law than the juror, subject to the tricks of the trade. It may not be broke, but the system needs some tweaking towards the juror's side or you get the justice you pay for.

There is a very simple answer...don't vote. If your not a registered voter, you do not qualify for jury duty. As one other respondent stated, it's a privilege to live in a place where your peers determine your guilt rather than the system. If you do not want to be a part of it...then do not be a part of it.

1) Because you're not a servant
2) Because you have not been scammed
3) Because you live in the United States, you have to pay a price for freedom, jury duty-being judged by a jury of your peers- is a small price to pay to live in this wonderful country!
4) Because jury duty usually lasts just a short time.
5) You can always move somewhere with harsher laws!

well we have a right to jury of our peers and that means those of us who have that right have to be the peers sometimes.

If you can be responsible you should be able to have enough savings or cushion to tide you over jury duty. You should not be living day-to-day, paycheck-to-paycheck.

there are ups and downs to everything. this is one of the consequences of the jury system we have. if you don't like it, then get going and lobby or get a job in the government where you can change the pay or the requirement for jury duty. make a difference.

You should be thankful that you live in a country where you have the right to a trial by a jury of your peers, and be proud to do your duty to your country by serving on a jury.

An indenture implies a contract. There is no contract in this case - it is part duty, just like voting, and part obligation, like paying your taxes and military service. It is your end of the deal in having citizenship, and all the privileges that imparts - including the right to pursue happiness.

Check the Constitution. You should be proud to live in a country that has a jury system rather than griping about it.
