How do you join one?

A guild is a lose collection of people who are basically signed up to a private channel of communications.

Bad guilds are just the above. Good guilds also help each other out and many high level members frequently give lower levels a hand. Sometimes its an instance run (I had a level 60 run the Dead Mines with me and let me keep all the loot.) Sometimes the actually give you items or gold (but high level players will have stuff too powerful for lower levels).

Its easy enough to join a guild, just accept an invitation from someone in a guild with a high enough rank to invite. You can usually find several of those people in the capital towns of each race. Just watch the chat channel and you'll see someone recruiting.

The guild talbard, which you see MANY WoW characters wearing can be purchased from the guild shop in each capital for 1 gold. Some large and well-off guilds will buy the talbard for new members, the talbard is not soul-bound, and will always show you current guild association. (IE if you change guilds your talbard will change too.) Some people join guild specifically for their talbard designs, but that is a little shallow don't you think?
