He returns to Edmonton for the first time tonight. How will the crowd greet him? Cheers or jeers?
Also, just watched an Edmonton return press conference with him and I must say that these crocodile tears are too much for me. Always liked the guy but stop your sissin'- you are a grown man.

Jeff- Captain Canada has nothing to do with the Oilers, it has to do with his international play. More games than anyone-
Smyth is currently the all-time leader in record games played by a Canadian in international with 60. His nickname is "captain canada"; he was named captain of Team Canada for the World Championships for 5 consecutive years from 2001 to 2005. Smyth also played for Team Canada in the 2006 Winter Olympics.

Also- 3rd liner at best? Your credibility has taken a big hit.

Men are allowed to cry only when they lose a family member, have a baby, or when someone t-bones their pickup truck.

I think they'll cheer. He's done so much for them. If Sakic left the Avs and came back to Denver in an Oiler uniform (hypothetically of course), people would give him a standing ovation.
Jeff: Smyth is NOT a third line player. On any other team he is a bona fide 1st liner, it's only on the talent-filled Avalanche that he plays on the 1st/1A line. In reality the Avs have two very strong lines: Sakic, Wolski, Brunette. And Stastny, Smyth, Hejduk. Our third line of Hlinka, Arnason, and Svatos would be a great 2nd line on many NHL teams.

akoz: As far as I know, Pronger left Edomonton because he succumbed to his wife. No wonder people booed him. And I'm not surprised at Chicago fans booing at all. They'd boo anything.

They will cheer for Smyth as that is the only thing they will have to cheer for this year. I hate Mullet-man being called Captain Canada too. Only in the so called "City of Champions" would they call a 3rd liner at best - Captain Canada. I know you have long cold winters and have nothing better to do, but get a life Oil fans. Or better yet take Highway 2 south and move to a real city.
Actually check that - don't bother.
Hey Bob, not saying he doesn't have a heart of a lion. It would be hard to compare his heart with many others. Heart doesn't equal actual on ice talent though. I believe if he played on the Wings or another team of that talent level, at this point of his career he would probably be 3rd line. As for Captain Canada... I still have a problem with it. I know he has lots of international experience but again, I think there were also a lot better (skilled) players on the ice at those times.
Plus the fact I am just trying to raise to ire of some Oil fans.

I don't mind the tears. Then again, I could chalk that up to the gender difference between you boys and I... But my favorite was when he started tearing up in an interview last year when they asked him about tearing up in his press conference. LOL.
I hope the crowd greets him with cheers. I'll be cheering him on. I'm thinking of his kids mostly, especially after hearing him say in that return press conference that Alberta is his home, as well as the home of his kids.

They'll cheer for him, but I'm waiting to see the reaction on Long Island. Islanders fans don't generally boo leaving free agents, but Ryan really screwed the Isles by playing coy all day even though he was going to the Avs anyway.

It will be a joyous ocassion for Oilers fans, Smyth was always one of the fam favourites, and made his name there. I certainly hope he does well this evening.
Awesome Bill,
It's okay to T-Bone a pickup truck, so long as the dog and the gun rack stays intact!

i personally think he will get booed. i am thinking this because look at chelios when he left Chicago to go to Detroit. He was massively booed by Chicago. a better example would be Pronger. he left Edmonton and when he came back for a game, what happend he was booed.
If you leave a team no matter who you are when you come back you will be hated

I know the fans will greet him warmly. As for the tears, some tough guys have a soft side. I try not to hold it against them but they may face public ridicule just the same.
I bet he pots one before the half way mark of the second.

Cheers, they have too much respect for Smyth to treat him as the next Pronger. He was dealt away by management, he didn't ask to be traded. I would expect a standing ovation when his name is announced.
