I plan to breastfeed so I don't want to use any hormonal birth control such as the Pill. I have PCOS so natural planning methods (charting my temps, etc) wouldn't work for someone like me. It actually took injectables and an IUI to conceive this little one, so I don't feel birth control is even needed...but my husband does. We dealt with infertility for years so it feels strange to even be thinking about birth control!

That being said...what are my best options after the baby is born? Thanks!

Condoms. Even though they're not ideal (in my opinion), they're less of an inconvenience for you, and if you change your mind about using birth control, its an easy one to just do away with at the drop of a hat! Good luck!

You can get pregnant while breastfeeding - and just because you had trouble getting pregnant before doesn't mean that will necessarily continue...sometimes your hormones change after a pregnancy.

Breastfeeding isn't a birth control method, and you won't be able to chart, as your hormones will be going nuts postpartum.

Condoms are a start - you can ask your doc now or even at the hospital postpartum - they'll come in and give you the 'you know you could get pregnant again right away' speech...they'd be happy to give you a myriad of options then.

Condoms. I also breastfed and my doctor didn't want to put me on the pill. My husband and I have used condoms for the last 5 1/2 years as our primary form of birth control and didn't have any mistakes. We planned for our daughter and I'm now 14 weeks pregnant. They work as long as you put them on early on - don't wait until the last minute. You can get the ribbed for her pleasure ones if you're worried about sensation problems. I personally don't notice a difference and clean up is so easy. No shower needed, just go right to bed.

they do have birth control pills called progesterone only pills. Thats what I used when I breastfed. You should use something cause often once you have a baby its easier to get pregnant. Discuss options with your OB.

Depo shot--no human error really, it lasts for 3 months, in some women it stops your period and it doesn't affect breastfeeding. I have used it after both of my first 2 pregnacies, I breastfed for a full year while taking it. It is hormonal, but it works, and I like the fact that i don't have to think about it.

There is a progesterone only pill that you can take. You can start taking it at 6 weeks when your milk flow is established, and it won't harm baby in any way.
