Your question is a fair one. My basic response is this: While every name was invented at some point, many of the authors of new names were extraordinary talents like, say, Shakespeare. I can't paint like Picasso, so I assume I can't make up names, either. And yet, I'm not squarely against every name that can't be traced back to the Bible or the Mayflower. On the contrary, I think there are many, many possible names out there - in nature, in the arts, in music, literature and on the map. Sometimes an invented name *will* catch my eye - I just gave the thumbs up to Andelyn. It's not my style, but it does have an appealing sound. The names that really craze me are the ones like Keydawnia or Ellessanderia, Traetyn or Jaxxin. They're too long, too much, too overdone, too weird and ugly to the eye. But I'd be totally behind naming your son Archer or Angus or Calder, Cruz or Dashiell or Nicholas and your daughter India or Endellion or Leacadie, Belen or Sarai or Coco. The world has plenty of Emmas and Aidens ... no reason to add another to the horde. But better to choose something familiar and simply rare, as opposed to coining something that might only work in your imagination.
