It means teaching children their alphabets by visual aids such as pictures with the letter of the alphabet on the appropriate picture. For example you may have pictures like an apple with A, a bird with B, a cat with C and so on. When teaching the child you would say A is for apple, b is for bird, c is for cat and so on.
