i cant remember if it's the side with the spring or the other side

the side with the large end goes towards the engine,the pointed end goes towards the radiator,good luck with it.

The thermostat spring faces toward the intake manifold cross over. The round raised pellet inside the spring must face the hot water first.

the spring goes down into the engine and the pointed end goes to the outside.

The spring end goes down, it is the senser end that controls the movement of the valve. Someone once reversed the ends and the engine would alternate from boiling to normal.
You could destroy the engine if you put it in wrong.

Spring goes toward engine... Pointed end is toward the radiator or hose.
