My husband was just diagnosed and prescribed Levothyroid-something-or-other. I'm wondering what kind of changes I might see in him. Right now he's pretty sluggish, depressed, and overweight...does this really all clear up?

Edit: I've already researched quite a bit online, what I want from Yahoo Answers is to hear from folks who have experienced life on thyroid medication. Thank you!

Yes and Yes. I have hypothyroidism. The medication he was prescribed is to replace the hormone his thyroid is not putting out.

Be patient, it will take a while (6 months or so) for the hormone to fully kick-in and his doctor will do periodic blood tests to make sure he is receiving the correct dosage of the medication.

He should start to feel better, however, the weight will not just fall off - some of it will, but the rest, it will take good ole' fashion exercise.

Good luck!

I got diagnosed hypothyroid in 2000, though I suspect I had the condition for a few years prior. I was first stated on Levoxyl, which did nothing at all for my thyroid symptoms. After 9 months on Levoxyl I added a small amount of Cytomel and this helped with 75% of my symptoms. 2 years later I wanted to try ARmour thyroid (natural med) It got rid of 95% of my symptoms and I feel so much better. I guess what I'm saying with this is if one medication doesn't help your husband look into another. There are many different medications and one of them should help.

About being overweight......thyroid meds usually do not cause weight loss when you are hypothyroid. They stop the weight gain and the less fatigue one has the more likely they are to exercise more resulting in weight loss. As far as diet......your husband should avoid soy, reduce carbs, and increase fiber.

When testing thyroid, make sure he always tests first thing in the morning. They usualy test TSH and TSH changes throughout the day. Testing in the morning gets it near its high point.

Yes I do have it. I take 100 mg. of sythroid daily. It made a dramatic difference in the first month.

I had been severely depressed for 7 years, exhausted, joint pain, just felt horrible continually. Within the first month I began felling so much better. The depression went away promptly. I am on pain meds for joint pain. But over all I am much better.

Please do an Internet search for Hypothyroidism to help inform yourself about how he is feeling.

I will say I wasn't much better until the Dr. increased the Sythroid from 50 mg. to 100 mg. daily. It made an enormous difference.

Good Luck.

Yep...I got it too. Been taking Synthroid for almost 20 years. I had the same symptoms. My face got real puffy, cold chills all the time, dry skin, loss of hair on legs. Drastically improved in one month time. I past it on to one of my daughters. Not to worry. With medication he will be fine.
