i have worked with handicapped children and the best thing i learned was to yes encourage them in what they do because they are limilted but also show them that there are times when you can and can't do these things and that what needs to be done he needs to learn the proper place and time, and i know that it is a long process to teach some people but it will pay off in the end.

I wouldnt discourage it but I would try and make sure he understands the difference between reality and fantasy. Example maybe he imagines being a warrior and fighting dragons. Well if he cant distinguish between reality and fantasy thats the kind that will be out imagining that a dog is a dragon and slaying it.

What in the world is wrong with an imagination? I'm thankful that George Lucas and Stan Lee weren't discouraged from using their imaginations.
Without imagination, we have no music, television, or other inventions.

Why is imagination only for children?
You can help your son to channel his imagination into something useful. Perhaps into writing. Or, Art. Or, any number of creative "adult" endeavors.
If your son has a robust imagination, it means that he can see issues from different angles much better than those of us who have accepted the blinders that society strives to put on us. Consider it a gift, not a burden. Work with this talent by guiding it... Not destroying it.

I don't really understand why you'd want to discourage a child's imagination. You should give some examples of what he's doing that seems to be a problem.

If he is imaginative that probaby means he is very creative. Maybe you could guide him to activites such as painting, writing, or photography so he can use these activites as an outlet for his creativity. Never discourage imaginative minds!

Speak with his doctor about it & see what he says. People are always such authorities when it comes to handing out advice. Trust in your doctor's advice.
