I mean the ones that they sold in the mid-to-late 50s. They were well build and heavy. We loved watching the trains go round and round.

had many Lionel trains. the favorite was a 4-6-4 Hudson type steam locomotive. although had several other diesels and the Lionel Trolley which was also a lot of fun. had the trolley set up on a totally separate system so it could bring passengers to the train station for longer rides.

I didn't have a brother! I was the one with that train set. Dbl. handled transformer & pill s to put in the smoke stack.
Had 2 full sets of trains and all that long wide track. Used to run it all through the house at Christmas time.
Try obtaining that type of train now & you will spend a fortune just for the locomotive.
Loved it all.

I don't have a brother, but I had a Lionel set in the late 50's-early 60's.
My favorite was a giraffe in a circus car that would duck his head when when it went under some kind of archway thing( can't remember exactly). And one of the engines was a snow blower, which was so exotic since we lived in the tropics!

Yes my brothers had lionel trains. It was a lot of fun to make the trees and the buildings to surround it. All hooked on a big slab of plywood.

no brother unfortunately - but had a friend who had a mega setup in one room of their house...I was absolutely fascinated with it, tom boy that I was...and even now my grandsons and I go the Ellipse on the Mall behind the White House to the National Christmas Tree each year to watch the elaborate train set up under the tree and to partake of the YuleLog and hot chocolate

My cousin did. My uncle set it up on a huge piece of plywood on top of a table behind a locked door. Nobody was allowed in who didn't have a key. They had laid out all the little towns and trees and such, and smoke did come from the engine. It was wonderful.

My dad owned some.He had them as his hobby from the very early 50's. We as kids would go down to the basement where he had them set up, and watch them go round and round. It was a huge area, and there were whistles, a silo, RR crossings, hills, bridges, what fun to watch. He gave them away to cousins in the 60's, he never bothered asking his 2 daughters if we wanted them.

My brothers (plural) did, and we enjoyed watching it, but the three younger of us weren't allowed to touch. And you're right. They were substantial in craftsmanship and weight.

Put a pill of some sort in the smokestack, it the train would look as if it were belching smoke.

Yes and he kept adding on to them each year. My dad made a large table out of plywood and legs from our old kitchen table and we could stand up and run the trains. When he first started out they had them riding in a circle under the tree!!! It was awesome !!
