pills are scored in the middle. Which side, if any contains the painkiller

The ingredients in a pill are thoroughly mixed. If you cut the pill into two halves, you get half of whatever present in the pill. The scored mark is only for identification purpose, so that you can tell one pill from the others.

Its not split into sides. Both Hydrocodone and Acetaminophen are both pain relievers. They are both mixed into the same tablet. The reason the pills are scored is so if the doctor directs you to just take half a pill, they are easier to split. The reason I say doctor, is because Hydrocodone is a prescription, whereas acetaminophen is just tylenol. Both of those are mixed to make Vicoden.
