I'm sorry, when did we enact the flat tax??
I make less than $30K, & they should pay the same tax as me? This would be fair??
They can pay slighty more yes! If I made that much, I wouldn't mind paying a little more for those who can't. Do you get greedy & think only of yourself when you come into money? Seems that way for republicans, doesn't it?
For your sneaky second question, trade me for a day, lets see what you think....

Yes, the country was more solvent when they did. Republicans have been cutting the top rate for decades. Cut in half as a matter of fact.
The working poor works much harder than I do - my pay is for my education and skill and I like what I do. I have also never lowered my withholding on the off-chance we will get a responsible government in place that balances revenue with spending.
Year Income brackets Rate range
1979 15 brackets 14%-70%
1982 12 brackets 12%-50%
1987 5 brackets 11%-38.5%
1988 3 brackets 15%-33%
1991 3 brackets 15%-31%
1993 5 brackets 15%-39.6%
2001 5 brackets 15%-39.1%
2002 6 brackets 10%-38.6%
2003-2006 6 brackets 10%-35%
Besides - other taxes - local sales and property for instance, tend to be regressive rather than progressive, because poor people have a larger percentage of their incomes in their homes and spend (and tax) a larger percentage of their incomes.
So those who make the greatest use of resources - low income on local and high income on federal, tend to pay the most.

the system is clearly set up to benifit these people and to help them keep their wealth... which is fine...
they just should pay a little more taxes in a system that's set up to benefit them...
and yes, I have thought about it... the vast majority either grew up in wealth or inherited the wealth and had many more opportunities than most people... and those that didn't have the benifit of wealth are almost always extremely intelligent/naturally gifted in a field that happens to pay well...
I've known several "rich" people (those that make in the income area you're discussing) and many "poor" people
(those that make less)... I'm still looking for the ones that do so much more work than the poor people do? I haven't found any yet? wierd
EDIT: aren't there rich dems? wouldn't that ruin your little "saying" if your ideas are correct?

yes.
and most of the hardest jobs pay the least.
I mean really what's harder being an investment banker or working in a coal mine???
The simple fact is that there are not enough 200K per year jobs to go around, and there never will be, capitalism requires there to be very poor and even unemployed people for it to work, you might want to read up on it some time, I discovered that for myself in a paper written by allen greenspan when I was about 12 or 13 years old.
I might add that a lot of us poorer folks have more than one job, and college educations, (complete with student loans that we have to pay back), thank you very much.

Thats a fine point,,,,,if everyone on earth had the exact same intelligence and talents, anyone who achieved less in life could be blamed as lazy,,,,but,,,,since not evryone has the same talents you really cant blame someone if they cant achieve the same success..... I personally have a younger brother that I would challenge anyone to try to outwork....unfortunately due to some health problems when he was very young he isnt the sharpest tool in the shed......have just as much respect for him as any millionaire..... These folks you mention making 200000 to 400000 per year did not get there entirely on thier own, most enjoyed publicly subsidized educations, whats the problem with asking them pay a little back
P.S. I personally am in the lower end of that income class.....Id be more than happy to pitch in a few bucks to help get people healthcare

Mute question. The top 7% of the people in this country pay 95% of the taxes. Bill Gates for example pays as much taxes in a single second as most people do in their entire lives.

Even if we go to a flat tax they'll pay more. People who make more have no way of avoiding paying a higher amount of taxes. Our current tax system make them pay a higher percentage. A flat/fair tax would tax them more because of purchases. There is really no way around it. I don't want to pay more in taxes as I get older and make more, but I don't sit around and complain about it all day either. It is what it is, and I just try to find the positives about where my money goes.

Interesting question and answers. My thoughts are:
That CEO who makes 400K a year probably started the company, dealt with the heartache and setbacks, has sacrificed tremendously, and will lose everything if the company fails.Should he receive the greater reward for success? No brainer answer is yes. There are always exceptions:CEO's with multi-million dollar compensation packages are not the norm;you do NOT legislate to punish exceptions.
Another argument is that they can afford to pay more so they should. We have a free market economy that rewards success and risk.If those who make less wish to have a bigger piece of the pie, take the risks and succeed, then you will have EARNED what you desire.
Worker on the floor works harder than any CEO.Again a falisy;spend a month at my desk and you will go running back to your regular job.I deal with government issues, vendor problems, customer complaints, employee problems, foreign competition, state regulations, federal regulations, cash flow issues, and so on.Trust me,there are days that I think fondly of just being a cog in the wheel instead of the one responsible for driving the wagon.
So,even though we earn what is ,to some, an exorbitant salary,we are doing just that, earning it.It is unfair as well as economically unsound to punish success.

I do make more. I should pay more. I have received more.
My employees use the roads more. I have more to be protected by the police and fire agencies.
It is in my interest to see to it that this country's infrastructure and Constitution are maintained. It is in my interest to bring the national debt as well as the deficit under control for my children and future generations of this country.
It would be a good business decision for all of us if I did my part to pay for a national healthcare system. It would cost all of us less and we would be a healthier and happier society.
Warren Buffet agrees with me.

It probably should be the same percentage for all. The only problem is that if the high taxes that the rich are paying was lowered then the poor would have to pay much more. The poor use almost all of their money just to survive.
