When I started selling stuff online I wasn't sure how much to charge for my goods. The problem is, you want to charge enough to make a decent profit, but you don't want to charge so much that no one will buy it!

I went to ebay and looked up what I was selling. For example, "Handmade Knitted Purse" just to see how much they were selling for on ebay. or IF they were being sold on ebay at all!

Then, I would look up the completed listings for those same keywords on ebay. so that I could check out how much of the stuff that is posted actually SOLD and what It sold for.

Turns out, no one on ebay was buying the type of stuff I was making. if they were, it was only for one dollar or something. So I figured out that ebay wasn't for me (It may very well be different for you!)

So I did a little bit of research and found etsy.com. It's basically like an ebay, but for crafters only. People buy and sell handmade items on there. You can't sell on there UNLESS IT IS HANDMADE. And compared to ebay, it really rocks! Instead of only being up for auction for 3, 5, or 7 days, stuff stays on etsy for 3 months! and the charges? it's only 20 cents a month for each item you post! that's pretty good!

Eventually, I grew out of etsy and just started my own website.

But make sure that if you really want to sell your stuff, you advertise advertise advertise!!!
-put a signature in your emails that posts wherever your items are being sold
- advertise on your myspace
- have your friends advertise on THIER myspaces
- advertise on your blog
- pass out business cards! (you can get 250 business cards for absolutely FREE from vistaprint.com - all you pay is the 4$ for shipping!)

good luck!

I started with Ebay just to see what people would buy, then graduated to my own website. I offered EVERYTHING, then it distilled itself down to a combination of what people will buy and what I enjoy making. I had several things that people would pay for, but I just didn't like making them. One hint - spell it "jewelry", not the other way. The other way looks like an anti-semetic slur.

I used Etsy too, but they don't advertise, so the only customers you get will be the other people who are selling on Etsy. Not really worth the price of a listing, once you have made the rounds.

My mum and I were hard up for money to go on a trip a bit ago, and so she made doll clothes and sold them on eBay. I've also done jewelry at craft shows and the like. Check out you area to see if any craft shows are being held - that's the way to get your name out.
