My wife dropped out of HS in the 10th grade. Several years later she got her GED and applied to a number of colleges in the Carolinas and West Virginia. More than a few accepted her.

She attended Coastal Carolina University in Myrtle Beach and got her BA in Communication. She then got another bachelor's (BSc) at another college and is now working on her master's in media communication management.

She never took the SAT or ACT but she was 25 when she started this journey and that makes a difference in admissions rules.

Bottom line, you can attend a 4-year with a GED. We know this because Betty did it. She wasn't accepted at every school she applied to but we expected that when we applied to places like Chapel Hill and Duke along with the tier 3-4 schools.

Contact the admissions office at schools you'd like to attend and ask them about GED holder admissions. The most competitive will not be much help, the tier 3 and tier 4 colleges will be pretty accepting of you.

This question is personal for me, I don't know about Florida specifically... in California (where I live) I had not yet graduated high-school or received my GED and I got in to community college, went from there to a 4 year State college and now have a doctorate. Don't give up, even if you have to do Community College first... it can be a great opportunity to explore different majors for cheaper than spending 5 (or 6!) years at a 4 year university because of changing majors halfway through!

Yes, absolutely you can go to a 4 year university with a GED. Of course you'll have to start at a branch campus (if they offer one). I can speak specifically about Penn State when I say that almost all of the smaller campus locations support students with GEDs and at these campuses you can get a baccalaureate degree from there or transition onto another campus that offers the degree you are seeking.

You can go to a 2 year or a 4 year university with a GED, but in lieu of providing high school ACT or SAT scores, most schools will have you take and pass a COMPASS exam to enter the school. Here is a link with a COMPASS test review:

im not really sure. I think you have to have good scores on your SAT and ACT before they make the choice whether or not you have takent the GED. I took my GED and im having trouble getting into a university. and my ACT score was 24. So i guess it really just depends.
