I think people make it harder than it is because they think they have to memorize a large number of disconnected facts. Or, if their teacher doesn't make them memorize things, then they find themselves overwhelmed by the large supply of seemingly disconnected facts that they have to page through in doing problem after problem. But if you understand what all those identities are saying, you soon see that they are largely redundant and there is really not so much to memorize.
I tell my students:"I don't want you to memoize this. I want you to KNOW this." Time spent to study and understand how the subject fits together, rather than just thinking about "how do I do this problem", pays off in the long run.

I personally love trig, and it is rather easy once you have been doing it for several years.
Anyone who says it is hard are probably those who never listen in class, so don't understand where certain identities and formulae come from.

It's not really hard. It's just really complex. That may be why they say it's annoying, but once you learn trigonometry, you realize it's easy and fun.

what makes trig, calculus, etc. hard for students is that they haven't mastered basic arithmetic and algebra, so they are still struggling with that.
