How many people live in Wyoming? 250 maybe. But they have TWO senators representing them. The 30 million or so people in NY have the same mumber of senators. DC? Zero senators.

Wyoming doesn’t even have the population of the one of the smaller boroughs of New York City like the Bronx. The overrepresentation is made worse by the antiquated Electoral College System where voters in Wyoming have more say in selecting the president than voters in bigger states.

Every state is entitled to two Senators but Wyoming only gets one Congressman while New York gets 29 and California gets 53. In the Senate each state is equally represented as a state. In the House of Representatives the people are represented according to population. This is done to carefully balance power. It is designed to prevent what the Founding Fathers called "the tyranny of the majority".

With this in mind, they set up many checks and balances that prevent a simple majority from riding roughshod over the minority. It is designed to promote compromise. Without these checks and balances, the country would have broken up long ago as people in the less populous states had their rights eroded away by the more populous states.

BTW- Wyoming gets three Electoral Votes. New York gets thirty three and California gets fifty four.

You are definitely not smarter than a fifth grader. We have two Houses of Congress, one, The Senate in which all states regardless of population have equal representation and the other, The House of Representatives where Representation is determined by population. So all 50 States Have 2 Senators and the 435 representatives are divided based on population distribution. Wyoming has only 1 representative in the House. Washington DC is not a State. It was set up as neutral ground for the states to meet for the operation of the union of federated independent states. It was specifically set apart from the states so it would not be influenced by their political struggles. That is why it has no representation in Congress. Its proximity would be seen as giving it an undo advantage.

In order to adopt the Constitution it was necessary to meet the concerns of the small states like Rhode Island and New Hampshire that they would be overwhelmed by large states such as Virginia and Massachusetts in a truly representative democracy. As a result the Senate was developed to control for such concerns.

In addition, the Senate was supposed to be insulated from the rule of the "mob" by having an extended term which would enable them to vote as leaders rather than as followers of the current trends.

Since spending bills are generated in the House it would seem that New York's concerns are adequately represented. DC is a problem and there should be some solution pursued.

That is exactly why we have 2 congressional branches. The US House and the Senate.

The Senate where everysate has the same representation and the House where delegation is based upon population.

So you assumption that a small population state has more representation is incorrect, as the representation of New York in the House is much greater then that of the Wyoming.

The states of Wyoming and New York has the same number of senators but not the same number of congressmen. D.C. however is not a state it is a city.

To add to what others have said, their votes are equal in a Presidential election because of the Electoral College.

EDIT: Without the Electoral College, Wyoming and others that have small populations would not even need to vote because the only votes that would matter would be the most populated states.

The answer is in Politics 101. Most grade school children could answer that for you. But the House of Rep. makes that adjustment, just a little help for your research.
