Has anyone ever used those cup things for their periods? Can you get TSS from them? How do they work? Would you recommend them?

I tried then once in high school and I didn't like it. It is this thick ring that has a collapsible plastic cup attached and you insert it right up to your cervix. They spill when you pull them out, I just was not impressed.

I use the Divacup and like it. However, it has advantages and disadvantages. Would probably depend on which were more important to you.

Re TSS... the cup is not absorbent, so while I suppose there's a TSS risk w/ any internal protection, it should be less, because I believe what causes TSS is the bacteria as they incubate in the tampon. But any cup company will have figures on TSS for their type of product.

Advantages: reuseable (saves money), environmentally friendly (because it's reuseable), hypoallergenic (I became allergic to regular tampons, had to buy organic, that was big bucks), only one thing to remember (no other supplies), in a REAL emergency (like a natural disaster) it won't run out the way disposable stuff will, lasts longer than a tampon or pad, comfortable.

Disadvantages: for some it takes some time to get used to using and you will likely spot badly at first; you almost need a private bathroom with sink (can use a regular ladies room, but can't really wash it properly); some women are uncomfortable putting it in and taking it out (if tampons aren't easy for you, don't even bother until they are).

Good luck! For all it's disadvantages, it's still the right choice for me.

My wife used to use her diaphragm the same way and it was very good.
